I usually give my watermelon rinds to my macaw, but he is never able to eat all of it before it goes bad, so I began to wonder if there is something else I can do with them. I have heard of Pickled Watermelon Rind, but is there anything else?
As I started to research Watermelon Rind I found that it has some amazing health benefits. Watermelon is high in antioxidants, and might just be a natural viagra! (Found at Watermelon: A Natural Viagra?) It is because of the amino acid citrulline, and there is more of this amino acid in the rinds than in the rest of the watermelon. This makes watermelon great for heart health as well.
According the the Better Nutrition article “Sweet on Watermelon” by N Zevnik (Full citation below), Eating watermelon with green tea enhances both. I must try some green tea spiked with watermelon!!! The article has a recipe for Watermelon and green tea soup. I will have to try it some time.
Zevik also says that watermelon helps to fight cancer, arthritis, heart disease, and erectile dysfunction. My husband has just had his prostate removed do to cancer, and I have high cholesterol. We really need to start eating more watermelon.
So back to the rind, what can be done with them? You can just eat the rind, but the heart tastes so much better. So, what about pickles, juice, marinade, wine or even use it in stir-fry. I am going to look up some recipe’s for the next time we have watermelon around the house, and that will be soon. lol
